Jewellery storage - ring in box

Just like you take care of your clothes or favourite shoes, your jewellery needs some TLC too. If you finally got that gorgeous necklace or ring you’ve been eyeing up, you’ll want to take proper care of it. Knowing how to care for your jewellery is important if you want those special pieces to last for years to come. Caring for you jewellery properly will help maintain the colour, shine and lustre of the metal and the sparkle of the stones or glass. This way you can keep wearing your favourite pieces for years. Reducing the amount we throw away also makes our planet just a little bit happier. To help you I have put together a few top tips for wearing, storing and cleaning your jewellery with care.

Keep it Dry

Put your jewellery on last, after putting on your moisturiser, makeup and perfume. This way you’re exposing your jewellery to less chemicals that will tarnish it over time. Keeping your jewellery dry is generally a good rule of thumb, and as well as keeping it away from creams and other liquids, make sure to keep it away from water. It’s a good habit to always take off your jewellery before showering or washing. Water and liquids can cause your silver jewellery to tarnish, and your gold jewellery might become duller in colour and shine.

Store in a dark place

When you’re not wearing your jewellery, store it somewhere dry and dark, like a jewellery box. This keeps it away from sunlight which can dull the colour of both the metal and some gemstones. It also keeps it from collecting dust and prevents accidental scrapes

Give it a Nice Clean

Once in a while, everything, including jewellery needs a clean. You can buy special creams or impregnated cloths for your gold and silver, but a toothbrush and warm water will do the trick as well. For tarnished silver, include a bit of washing up liquid before gently cleaning with the brush and wiping dry. This is also a great way to clean gemstones, as they get dull as dirt gathers over time.

And there you go, easy peasy. All you need to know to keep your jewellery in great condition for many years to come.
